June 12, 2012 Today, the Peru Crew began with a discussion about the group dynamic and the different stages of a successful group: forming, storming (which is when members become a bit annoyed with one another), performing, and transforming. WE made it our mission to grow closer together and learn more about each other over the next couple of weeks. Then, we all went river rafting and, for many, it was their first time experienceing white water rapids. It was my first time and it was very exciting and super fun. Before we reached the rapids, each raft had a water battle with the others. Despite the splashing, soacking, falling in, and even the occasional stealing of other raft members, everyone finished the journey unscathed. It was a wonderful adventure and I can easily say that I got closer to my fellow Peru Crew members because we all had to work together to maneuver the raft. A lovely picnic lunch was prepared for us at the end of the rafting and everyone returned to the hotel sated, where a scavenger hunt type activity awaited us students. The group was divided into 5 smaller goups and each group had to map out a section of the town. After the drawings were completed, we discusssed global issues that were present in Peru, such as poverty, homelessness, lack of education, and an unhealthy overpopulation of stray dogs. Because of this activity, we all talked with the locals and got a feel for our home town. We ate dinner and then walked to a shaman's house where he performed a ceremony in honor of mother earth. It was very fascinating and I felt honored to be participating in something that not every person experiences. The shaman dedicated many items to honor of mother earth and the sacred mountains and wrapped it all in a present; he is taking it to the mountains to burn as an offering to the blessed beings. I still can't believe that I'm in Peru EVerything is so beautiful. One thing that really caought my eye was the number of stars in the sky; it is really really beautiful. Peru has gone above and beyond my expectations and I look forward to the next tweleve days! ~Stephanie Smyczek :)

Thanks to all of you for your postings! I agree with Mrs. D'Amore that we love getting the postings. We are filled with pride to hear from Mr. Webster about how well you are doing. There are a few tears too, as you are so far from us. BTW, no rain in So California!

I'm so glad you all are having fun and GROWING and LEARNING together. Write it all down for yourselves (no need to share unless you feel compelled) -- you'll be so happy to have recorded your thoughts years and decades from now. You are all so lucky to have this wonderful opportunity to learn about the world and discover how serving others can be most enriching for yourselves!
Above all keep smiling and remember we love you!
